This is Us was created and performed by students from New Directions Pupil Referral Unit in Newham, London, alongside Protein’s professional dance artists. The work was created with the young people over a three-week intensive creation period. The film is influenced by Protein’s Border Tales, exploring themes of multiculturalism and identity. A Pupil Referral Unit is a type of school specifically set up to provide education for children who are unable to attend a mainstream school. Photos © Alice Underwood

DAN.CIN.LAB is an artistic platform created by STÉLA non-profit organization, engaged in the creation, production, commissioning and distribution of projects combining dance and image around societal issues. DAN.CIN.LAB now gathers 4 activities developed around strong skills: DAN.CIN.FEST (formerly DESARTS//DESCINES Festival), DAN.CIN.FILMS, DAN.CIN.PASS, DAN.CIN.PROD. DAN.CIN.LAB is also co-founder of Studiotrade and the Mediterranean Screendance Network. This is Us was created as part of JOIN THE DOCKS and supported by the Royal Docks Team. This is Us was filmed at The Silver Building, The Crystal Gardens, Royal Victoria Dock Bridge and other locations in the Royal Docks, London Borough of Newham in May 2021.
