Mélanie Demers

Function
Choreographer

Mélanie Demers is a choreographer, word lover, moviegoer and art addict established in Montreal where she founded the dance company MAYDAY in 2007. Having studied literature and theatre, Mélanie Demers pursued her professional training as a dancer at LADMMI. She graduated in 1996 and started her career working with emerging choreographers before joining O Vertigo with whom she collaborated for nearly ten years. In parallel, she was already developing and building her craft as a creator. Her work has charmed by its originality, intensity and its complexity, exploring the darker zones of the human condition. Socially engaged as an artist, Mélanie Demers travelled to teach dance in Kenya, Niger, Brazil and Haiti, amongst other destinations. The harsh reality of the developing countries strengthened her beliefs that the role of art is to address political issues and to stimulate a debate of ideas. Les Angles Morts (2006), Sauver sa peau (2008), Junkyard/Paradis (2010), Goodbye (2012) and MAYDAY remix (2013) have all been created from this perspective. To date, Mélanie Demers choreographed  over fifteen works and was presented in some thirty cities across Europe, America, Africa and Asia.
